St. Thomas of Canterbury operates a Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry, and Clothing Room as part of its Catholic presence in the Uptown neighborhood.

Soup Kitchen

Our Soup Kitchen is open every Tuesday and Friday throughout the year, except on Christmas Eve/Day.  We currently serve 175 to 200 people each time.  The doors are open to guests from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Volunteer activities include the preparation of meals, setting the tables, serving the meals to our seated guests and, of course, cleaning up!  Please click here for information about volunteering or scheduling a volunteer group.

Food Pantry

If you need food and live outside the 60640 zip code, please consult the Greater Chicago Food Depository Agency Locator (Cook County only) or Direct2Food (Northern Illinois) for the pantry closest to you.  If you don't get a match for your zip code in the GCFD Agency Locator, the nearest pantry may be in a neighboring zip code.

Our Food Pantry is open from 9:30 a.m. until 12 noon every Tuesday and two Fridays each month (usually the 2nd and 4th Fridays).  We serve anyone with a home address within the boundaries set for us by the Chicago Food Depository.  Our Food Pantry Boundaries are from Wilson Ave. north to Bryn Mawr, and from Lake Michigan west to Clark St. (60640 zip code).  We can serve households in our area once every 30 days.  We can serve out-of-area clients once on an emergency basis.  We ask clients not to arrive earlier than 8:30 a.m. and to please respect the quiet of our residential neighborhood.

Drop-off donations are accepted Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the rectory.  Larger deliveries are accepted Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays when the Pantry or Clothing Room is open, deliveries are accepted from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Clothing Room

Our Clothing Room is open most Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 12 noon.  The Clothing Room offers donated, clean clothing for men, women, and children in a variety of sizes.  Please call ahead to verify that we are open.  We ask our patrons not to arrive before 8:30 a.m. and to please respect the quiet of our residential neighborhood.
