Volunteer Opportunities

We could not run our community outreach programs without the assistance of our great volunteers.  We have volunteer opportunities in our Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry.

Soup Kitchen

St. Thomas of Canterbury Soup Kitchen offers opportunities for motivated volunteers to serve our guests in an atmosphere of hospitality and peace.  Opportunities are available on Tuesdays and Fridays between 3:30 and 7:00 p.m. Volunteers assist with preparing food, setting up tables and chairs, serving the meal, and cleaning up.  Groups and new volunteers should plan on arriving no later than 4:00 p.m.

We accept volunteers under the age of 18 only with appropriate supervision. Young people between the ages of 14 and 17 may volunteer with adult supervision (1 adult over 21 for every 5 students). Supervising adults should understand that their primary role is to provide guidance and motivation for their young people rather than directly serving clients themselves.  Children under 14 may volunteer with their parents. For reasons of safety and logistics, we cannot accept volunteers who do not meet these age and supervision requirements.  We are also unable to take volunteers doing court-ordered community service.

Volunteers need to dress appropriately for preparing food and serving others.  Closed-toe shoes are required for safety (no sandals or flip-flops), and we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for being on your feet for several hours.  Please, no leggings/yoga pants, no shorts or skirts above the knee, no sleeveless tops or tops that reveal the midriff or cleavage, and avoid low-rise combinations that leave your back uncovered if you lean over while serving our seated guests. Inappropriately dressed volunteers may be asked to cover up, change, or leave.

We schedule approximately 20 volunteers each Tuesday and Friday.  Groups of 5 or more should request a date at least a week in advance.  The maximum group size is 20, though we prefer to schedule groups of no more than 10-12.  You can check the availability of dates on the calendar posted at calendar.yahoo.com/stcsoup (note: the calendar is view-only).

Please contact Br. Ayub Mwenda at 773-878-5507 or send an e-mail for more information or to schedule a group.

Food Pantry

St. Thomas of Canterbury Food Pantry accepts individual volunteers to assist with registration and food distribution on Tuesdays and some Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  These volunteer positions require training and are more appropriate for those wishing to make a commitment to come on an ongoing basis.  Registration requires use of a computer and tablet.  Food distribution volunteers can expect to handle bags and boxes of up to 25 pounds and should be comfortable dealing with the public.  Please contact Br. Ayub Mwenda at 773-878-5507 or send an e-mail for more information.
