Confirmation

Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation are considered the three sacraments of Christian Initiation. Confirmation celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles on Pentecost. The person receiving Confirmation is called to reinforce the faith received in Baptism by committing publicly to live the Gospel values.

Confirmation must be administered by the local bishop in a special celebration. In order for a person to receive the sacrament, he or she must go through a special training in catechesis.

Candidates

Candidates must receive two consecutive years of faith formation before participating in the sacrament of Confirmation.

Candidates for Confirmation must be at least in Grade 7 to be enrolled in sacramental preparation.

Parents must show proof of the child's Baptism and First Holy Communion.

At Mary, Mother of God Parish, Religious Education students are enrolled in Grade 7, for reception of Confirmation in Grade 8.

Adults who have not received the sacrament of Confirmation should enter the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Please call the parish office at 773-561-5343 for more information.

Confirmation sponsor

Each candidate for Confirmation should choose a sponsor who meets the following requirements:
  • Is at least 16 years of age
  • Is a practicing Catholic
  • Has received his or her own Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Eucharist, Confirmation)
A child's parent cannot be their Confirmation sponsor. A sponsor does not need to be the same sex as the candidate.

Registration

All students should be registered in the Religious Education Program and have a completed form on file. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all registration forms are electronic, with paper versions available in exceptional circumstances.

Registration for Religious Education is typically open in mid-May and closes at the end of July. There will be updates at Masses and on the parish websites in the weeks prior to the opening of registration.

All students should be regular and punctual in attending Religious Education. If a child misses classes frequently without valid reason, the coordinator of Religious Education and catechist will ask to meet with parents to discuss the issue.

In addition, children enrolled in preparation for Confirmation should attend Sunday Mass consistently.

If you have any questions, you may contact Candido Reyna, coordinator of religious education at: 773.443.7263 or
